Trying to increase the rigidity of my drill press milling machine. New epoxy granite square column for the drill press mill. In this one, I show how I made a stiff square column for my drill press mill and built a new table that rides on linear guides for the Z-axis. It's a mini knee mill. If you want to convert your drill press into a milling machine, don't miss this one. This is part one of a...

This is a bad EGR valve which returned a P0404 trouble code. This one is a Delphi EGR valve that is only a few months old. Really easy to tell when they fail if you have a scanner that will let you control the duty cycle. They make noise and the EGR pintle position is all over the place. Solution is to replace the EGR valve. The P0404 will clear on its own once the new valve is installed.

    Hello there, could you by any chance send me the 3D-Model of the frame you created for the video? Step or any other type would be fine, but SLDPRT highly appreciated, as I use SolidWorks myself. Would be great and save me a ton of work. It doesn´t have to be perfectly my own frame, but I need a model of a retro-mtb-frame for an upcoming project. It would be great, if you could help me out on that. Kind regards Viktor (btw. Hello. I was super inspired by your video and bought my self a specialized rockhopper 1998 frame. Waiting for my parts and ill start working on it. Through axle and disc brakes. You did the analysis on the frame load when mounting rear disc brakes. Do you think that mounting front disc is a good idea on the fork that doesn't have disc brake mount initially, or is it better to look for a new fork?

    • @RobertAdairWorkshop
      @RobertAdairWorkshop 8 дней назад

      Sounds like this is going to be a fun project. Is the original fork one of those beefy steel forks that would have come on it, originally? Those are way over-built. I think you'd be fine to convert it. That being said, you can find steel, straight-steerer disc forks on eBay for under $100. Might be worth getting to save the time fabricating a mount on the original fork. Search eBay for "Twin Six" fork and you'll find a bunch of options.

    It looks like you welded disc brake mounts onto a rim brake frame and fork. I'm not sure this is safe. Forks and frames are beefed up (vs their rim brake counterparts) to withstand the forces of a disc brake. That's why disc brakes end up being about a 1kg weight penalty over rim brakes.

    • @RobertAdairWorkshop
      @RobertAdairWorkshop 12 дней назад

      I did the engineering work to determine it was safe on the frame. Fork was already a disc fork. I'll bet you haven't seen that one. Take a look if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/e0UhOou45IU/видео.html

    Is that flux wire welding? I imagine that if a gravel bike is really being used on gravel, rather than just riding down to the coffee shop, then surely braking forced must be seriously reduced? Does anyone do a hub brake derailleur hub?

    • @RobertAdairWorkshop
      @RobertAdairWorkshop 14 дней назад

      Yeah, it's flux core. I'm good enough with it. I have some other videos where you could see me repair my Dodge's frame with it, or make a milling machine with it. Anyway, the braking forces aren't as high as people think, and the stays are stronger than they think, too. I talk about it in-depth at 9:04. I think I remember seeing something like a hub brake on motorcycles many years ago. Not sure if that technology ever went anywhere. Its an interensting idea to take a look at.

      @@RobertAdairWorkshop Thanks. Yes, I've started using one too for running repairs having had so called non-bicycle welding "pros" make total messes of simple jobs, like carrier or bracket repairs. Someone described them to me a "metal hot glue gun" but, so far, they seem to work well enough. I've not been brave enough to use them on frame, for fear of punching holes in the tube walls by using too many watts, or whatever it is. I have no idea of how deep I am penetrating the metal yet, or even if. Thanks for the video. I'm interested in a tri-brake set for cargo bikes or old tandems, ie a rim AND a disc brake, like they used old drag brakes.

On my more modern machines (from QIDI), I do run Cura, but I've read that, to use another slicer would require converting the Makerbot over to a new board. I want to keep the Makerbot's soul (so to speak) so I haven't done that.

    Props for this. For myself, I am perfectly happy with the way I typically 'gravelize' nineties mountain bikes: put faster rolling tires on it, swap the handlebars for a drop bar or a Surly Corner Bar type of handlebar, find a high and short stem to get the position right, and that's it. I like the snappy acceleration and the nimble steering of 26" wheels (and their strength), and well adjusted V-brakes work perfectly fine for me.. That said, I do like the concept and realization of this bike very much. Props also for the calm editing and talking us thru the build, including the mistakes. That's a breath of fresh air compared to most bike build video's here. Good job!

      I've been watching. Kona makes some that are good. A few models from Trek, after they stopped using lugged frames, are good. Most Giants are too small so skip those. Specialized tends to be too long though I found a HotRock that might work that I'm thinking about buying. Really, watch the top tube measurement. Make sure it fits within your size range for a road bike. I ride a 54 but I like small bikes. Unless you're over 6'1, I'd recommend a top tube of 56 or shorter. Look at frames where the seller posts top-tube measurements and find one that is short enough. But then look at the top-tube CC bottom bracket measurement. If it's less than about 17" with a 56 top tube, the frame will feel too small. I guess what I'm saying is, look at the top tube measurement. If it looks good, make sure the seat tube isn't too short, then look to see if the head tube is 100mm or longer. If you find one that meets this criteria, you're gold.
